To be honest, it might be better if you complete the game unmodded first and then go experimental on a second playthrough.The best mods IMO are Stacking Inventory, Larger Stage Coach (specially usefull if you wanna give a try to the new modded characters), Level Restrictions Removal, the mod that removes the religious Abomination restriction and the Unofficial Palette Expansion. Pitch Black Dungeon Mod is a very different take on the game. So I wouldn't recommend it for a new player.:).
Oct 19, 2013 Trouble installing Sins of a Galactic Empire Mod. This never occured in Requiem. The unit and faction variety is awesome (which is something Requiem doesn't have) but the AI is very erratic. Apparently the Vong and NR will just sit around and do nothing and the only way to get the AI to get off its butt is to put it on agressive hard/unfair.
